Today in Del's History: Decatur Prepares for Record-Breaking Popcorn Ball at 1990 Celebration

Excitement fills the air as Trudy Jacobs and Lou Ann Jacobs embark on a monumental project: crafting what could potentially be the world's largest popcorn ball, slated to measure an impressive 6 feet in diameter. This ambitious endeavor, set against the backdrop of the 1990 Decatur Celebration, promises to capture the imagination of attendees and possibly etch their names into the annals of world records.

Kelly Construction Inc. has been tasked with constructing a custom stainless-steel mold to facilitate the creation of this colossal treat. Once completed, the popcorn ball, comprising Del's signature mixture of popped popcorn, corn syrup, and white sugar, will be carefully transported to the celebration grounds via forklift.

Lou Ann Jacobs, mindful of production costs, has opted to forego the addition of vanilla and butter typically found in traditional popcorn ball recipes. However, to maintain visual appeal, food coloring will still be employed to enhance the popcorn ball's vibrant appearance.

The project underscores Del's Popcorn Shop's longstanding commitment to quality and innovation, blending tradition with a dash of local flair. As anticipation builds for the unveiling at the Decatur Celebration, locals and visitors alike eagerly await the chance to witness history in the making and savor a piece of Decatur's culinary ingenuity.
